I had a quick walk-through of the specs and appearance with a nice gallery of images of the phone, that’s in-case you need a refresher what this phones has in its bag. I have had this phone for more than two weeks now, using it on a day-to-day basis, and it didnt disappoint. The reason this phone was launched was to provide the dual-sim users with an Android option that they would trust to take them on a full-time basis giving them value. Let me go straight to what makes this phone tick.

The dual sim dual standby

Ofcourse, this is why this phone is here in the first place, so makes sense to start with what you get off the dual sim feature. The sim slots are behind the bettery, no hot swapping here, only available for the memory card. But once you have the phone on, you get the sim card manager as the first option in the phone settings.

Sim Manager allows you to:

Select the sim card to use for data. You cannot use data on both sims at the same time(does it even make sense?) so you select which sim card will be for data use. Great if a carrier has good voice offers and another has good data offers. Power to the subscriber!

Select icons to represent whichever sim. There are five icons, Sim 1, Sim 2, home, office and heart. Gives you ideas, maybe one sim card is just for family, its easy to identify them in the notification icon when you pull it down for selecting.

Register name. You can rename the SIM cards.

Also allows you to choose whether you want the data line to also receive calls while live. Nice option since if you disable this option that line will only be used for data, so no disconnections during calls. There is a shortcut of the same on the notifications pull down menu where you can tap to select the active sim card to call from.

Android 2.3.6

This is a good feature as its just recently that Android devices came with Android Gingerbread, the bulk of them come on Android 2.2 Froyo and below. Gives users a better user interface and faster experience.

Qwerty and type

This is the differentiator between Galaxy Y Pro Duos and Galaxy Y Duos, the latter is full touch, giving users an option to select if they are the qwerty guys or love full touch. Galaxy Y Pro Duos has the best of both, giving qwerty and type. Qwerty is associated with email and document editing for fast typing on the physical qwerty buttons. This phone has nice well laid out buttons, with the usual shortcuts to enable fast activity. The dial application is operated via touch but is also accessible via the optical track-pad. Plus if you lock it with the usual screen lock you will still need to unlock via touch.

Added below there as an easy scroll is the optical track-pad, to make it easier to scroll the menus up, down, left and centre.

Display

The 2.6″ display could be termed as one of the disadvantages of the phone, its convenient foe most applications, but to some it proves a headache to use. For example if you try the pull to refresh feature on twitter and other apps you will find some restrictions as to how fast and easy you are able to achieve that due to the tiny screen size. Other than that, the 320 by 240 pixels display is sharp for an entry level device.

Camera

The 3.15 mp camera is just right for the phone, produces surprisingly good images at good lighting. Ofcourse you have nothing to show of it when it comes to low lit places since it’s a fixed focus, no flash camera. Surprise surprise! It has a front camera for video calls, you dont get that on budget phones.

Data and speed

With the 7.2MBps HSDPA you got a good device right there, that is fast data for most networks. In most places you wont get the 21MBps speeds, but you can get a promise of 3-7Mbps, this device will make sure you enjoy that. coupled with the 832Mhz processor and 512MB RAM. For the screen size of Galaxy Y Pro Duos size, the graphics wont slow the device down, so that RAM and processing power works just well.

You also get the ability to use Wi-Fi where there is one available. Tethering phone data is also an option factored in the device, so it is also handy for those days when you don’t have a fixed connection or a modem. Bluetooth version 3.0 and USB 2.0 are also factored in

Storage

The 160mb user memory is barely enough, but most of these phones compromise storage for pricing to make it affordable. However it comes bundled with a 2GB memory card, and you are at liberty to increase this to 32GB via microSD.

Battery life

The 1350mh battery life ensures that you are connected for an average of two days on optimal use. The small screen size comes to play here, reducing the power needs, even with the dual sim standby feature and the sharp graphics screen, the phone stands the test of time delivering to the optimal user.

Bottomline

This phone is good for the budget spender as you will get the qwerty and touch feature on a dual sim standby phone. That combination is a first in the smartphone world. So you can handle mail or office calls on one sim and social or home on another sim in the same phone. Saves you alot on hardware costs incase you would have preferred such an arrangement. The small qwerty form factor makes it easy to use and hold in the hand, giving the light 112grams in the pocket feel at the same time. The TouchWiz UI is abit unique on this phone, with the appdrawer on the side as opposed to the usual bottom, an idea I assume meant for utilizing the limited space on the 2.6 inch screen.

On the flip side, if you are a person who loves reading on a phone you may be frustrated by the screen size, giving the small font making you require to squint at some point. This is also a disadvantage when you are trying to refresh some apps as I stated earlier in this post. The pros on the phone gives are enough for one to overlook those, I personally like this phone and understand why it has been the most searched on this blog and possibly in the blogs for quite some time. The retail shops sing of a similar situation, with stock running out, according to several shops I made contact with.

Others were buying them from the Kenyan market for use in other countries due to the subsidized status of the phones. Close nearby was the Samsung Galaxy mini which offered an upgrade option to the Ideos user at a difference of Kes. 5000 bob(Ideos was selling at Kes 8000 or $10 while Galaxy mini was selling at Kes 13,000, both at a subsidized price by mobile service providers). There are other devices competing for this market that doesnt want to stick with feature phones but have a meager budget for a phone.

In comes Samsung Galaxy pocket, a budget smartphone with almost premium features on a price point of Kes 10,000 at Safaricom shops. There is something I can foretell, yes, quote me on being a prophet, but these devices will sell out FAST! Just like the Galaxy Y pro Duos is.

With this you get Samsung’s trusted brand with a phone which offers better battery life(800htalktime), better processor(832Mhz), more memory(3GB), Capacitive multi-touch and a better OS(Android 2.3 Gingerbread) albeit on a similar screen size as the Ideos, on a price point of 10,000 bob. The other device that would offer similar specs is the LG L3 who’se price point is abit higher. Samsung Galaxy pocket is a small, light droid at just 2.8″ and 97 grams and the fact that it will give budget conscious consumers a taste of Android 2.3(most of previous entry level devices run Android 2.2 Froyo). This makes it at a very unique position to capture the mass market, add the fact that its selling subsidized by Safaricom, which has availability in major towns and is also the largest mobile service provider in the country by far. Even with the impending introduction of a new model Huawei device by Safaricom. It always pays to be there first. Couple that with the yet to be launched Safaricom Online shop that will be available in three Kenyan Cities very soon and you have a winner there.

So there you have it, Samsung AllShare allows one to share media or games direct with your TV, laptop, camera and mobile phone either wirelessly or via cable. Music Hub has Smart DJ which automatically generates a playlist to suit your mood. Windows phone device makers have been striving to make most of the features an ordinary smartphone user would require out of the box, to cover the hole left by lack of apps on windows platform. This has made most windows phone users feel their device as sufficient without any addons.

The device id a plain looking slab, obviously not much effort was put to make the device look nice as this is in no way what the final design will look like.

But from this we can pick up a few details of what to expect from the device once its out and selling. This is a high end device, assumed from the specs, the large 4″+ HD screen, its said to run on an ARM chip based1.2GHz dual-core processor. Something worthy of note is the huge role Samsung has played in making it bear the trademark TouchWiz UI, just like many Android, Bada and some feature phones look like. Complete with the pull-down menu that has the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Vibrate and rotate icons at the top. The device is also said to have push notifications and several apps preinstalled, like Facebook, Twitter and Google, so this should be easy to move in once its ready to sell.
See the video below:

There is one outstanding home menu that can be pressed and held to reveal the task manager. Samsung icons again are predominant, there are also multiple homescreens. The HTML5 browser is said to beat anything that is currently selling in the market. It would obviously not make much sense to launch a platform that doesnt have much edge to the existing ones, so if we can get much if this Linux and Meego based OS having greater customisations the better for adoption.

What do you think of Tizen?

Samsung Galaxy S III did not miss to impress as was expected of it. Donning a 4.8 HD Super AMOLED display(1280×720), TouchWiz UI version 4.0, 8MP Autofocus camera with LED flash and no lag at all, front 1.9MP camera, HD video recording @30fps also with no shutter lag, Android Ice Cream Samdwich OS, 3G HSPA+ of upto 21Mbps with an option of 4G for some markets where the infrastructure is stable like Japan, Bluetooth 4.0.4, NFC, 16/32GB internal storage options with a 64GB device also going to be available soon, and a microSD slot that can take upto 64GB, dimensions of 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm, a weight of 133g and a 2100mAh battery, Corning Gorilla Glass 2, the much famed 1.4 GHz Cortex-A9 Quad core processor and a Mali-400MP Graphic Processing Unit the device was sure to impress.
Inside the impressive hardware and the curvaceous minimalistic design, came in some nice features from out of this world.

Redefining Smartphone Technology

S-Voice

Even though we had already been wowed by Siri from the iPhone 4S launch late last year, Samsung came up with its own S-voice that allows the user a great deal of interaction. You can ask your phone to wake up, snooze the alarm if you are not really a morning person, set the alarm, add or reduce volume on the set and also reject calls. Heck you can even tell the camera when to take a pic. Whoch brings me to point number two.

Photo selection

Beyond the camera and video having virtually no lag, the Samsung Galaxy S III Gt-19300 camera takes a burst of 8 shots in no time and selects the best among them to make sure you get the best out of the photography, so reducing those closed-eyes moments.

Social Tag

Once you have your photos taken, social tag does it for you, tags your friends faces and lets you link these with your social media sites. Amazing enough, you can see their social media status just ny looking at their images. There is als othe buddy photo share that allows you to share the recognized faces with their respective owners.

AllShare Cast

Another awesome feature allows you to share the images on your phone to larger displays like monitors and TVs, wirelessly, and use the phone’s controls to continue doing what you would do on your phone with images, but on the larger display. Gives you an idea, doesnt it? Presentations!

Allshare Play

Anothee wow factor, DLNA and Wi-Fi Direct allows you to access the documents on remote devices and you can work on these docs on the other devices, realtime.

Pop up Play

Have you ever wished for multitasking to be taken to the next level on the smartphone? Kinda like what you do on the computer, minimize a window and have a floating other application while you write? Well Pop uo Play delivers just that, and here is where the Quad-Core processor value comes to play. You can watch a video floating on the screen like a jQuery image while you are working on something else sharing your 4.8 inch screen. impressive?

S Beam

Samsung Galaxy S III takes sharing to the next level, providing so many options, from Bluetooth 4.0, Allshare Cast, Allshare Play, Buddy Photo share and NFC based Android Beam. With this you can share an image of upto 1GB in 3 minutes, or a 10MB file in two seconds by simply tapping it to another Galaxy S III device, no strings attatched.

Smart Alert

When you leave your phone idle for some moment, you will get a gentle vibration that will alert you of new messages, missed calls or even tweets.

Direct Call

This one is a very intuitive feature, where if you are texting somebody and decided to call the person, just lift the phone up to the ear and the direct call will just call the person.

Smart Stay

This one is the feature I found to be most amazing. As long as you are looking at the Galaxy S III, the Smart Stay feature has a small eye on the left of the notifications that utilises the front camera to detect whether you are looking at it. As long as it identifies your stare, it wont dim the display or go on screen saver mode, so you can go on reading on the 4.8″ screen for longer. Though I dont know whether that still works when its dark.

50GB Dropbox

Even though the Samsung S-cloud did not see the light of day during launch, Samsung announces something worthy of note for future Samsung Galaxy S III Gt-19300 buyers, they will get 50GB of dropbox for a year, just for owning the device.

Flipboard

Some apps that are traditionally exclusive for Apple devices leave Android and other platform users green with envy due to functionality, some of them are Flipboard and Instagram, the which has since ported to Android. Samsung Galaxy S III Gt-19300 will be the first Android users to get Flipboard exclusively for some time, before it rolls out to other users. Well, we have pulse, but Flipboard is the ish.

Galaxy S III comes fully set to make mobile payments via NFC. During launch, the GT-19300 was made available in two colours, Marble White and Pebble Blue, but other colours will soon be available. Availability in the markets will be first in Europe on the last week of May, other markets gradually later on. Leaves me wondering, what about the numerous pre-orders? Do these also get as soon as its available in regions?

Top among them was the reaffirming that Nokia is sill going the Tablet way, phones and hybrid. His words below hint to something like a phone-tablet blend.

Tablets are an important one, so that is being looked into, and there will be different hybrids, different form factors in the future.

The rumours about the Nokia tablet have been going on for some time now, and its expected that Nokia will release it as soon as Windows 8 is available. The tablet of choice being the Nokia Coffee Tablet, taking the Nokia Lumia 800 design. The phablet, coined from the middle ground device, the Samsung Galaxy Note that took the best of both worlds and carved a niche of its own in a daring move by Samsung took the world by storm, got many reactions and got accepted. We have since seen more 5 inch devices from LG and Panasonic, a sign that phablets have come to ba accepted for their capabilities, particularly for those wishing to have as much screen real estate off their smartphones.

So lets wait and see what Nokia pulls off their sleeves in the Q2-Q3 region. What do you think?

This as I mentioned earlier is one of the most searched for items on this blog. Seems thew concept must have appealed to many. The device is touch and full qwerty form factor. Comes with Android 2.3.6 and is capacitive multi-touch. More on the specs I will list below. Fast forward to dual sim and qwerty, since these are the key selling point of this piece, and the price point ofcourse. With this you can select from the phone settings, what sim card you want to use for data and which one for calls. If you are thinking what am thinking, you have already eliminated the need for the traditional modem. Since you can have both sim cards, the voice sim and the data sim on one device, and still utilise the 7.2Mbps HSDPA this device offers. Well that will eat up on your battery though, and reduce the battery life.

The qwerty buttons are easy to use, though abit hard when you do the keypress. You have the option for several functions to use the capacitive touch screen. I dont have much stories for this as at now, but see the phone specs below and the photo gallery further below. Images were taken using a Samsung Galaxy S III. Oh, and I forgot to mention, price point I am not sure, but can give you a hint to guess from, its single sim counterpart the Galaxy Y Pro is selling at Kes. 20,000, so for this you could add one or two thousand Kenya shillings. And just like Galaxy Y Duos, you get a free 2GB memory card bundled in.

First countries to experience it will be Russia and India(why does it have to be Russia always?). Nokia 808 is known for its record-breaking cameraphone capabilities, donning the 41mp camera that provides sharp images with a max of 38mp max resolution. Nokia Pureview came as a result of over 4 years of research and was launched on February on the Symbian Anna platform. It made Nokia get positive mentions even with the dwindling fortunes caused by the platform shift from Symbian to Windows, the latter which is having slow customer adoption, the former which has been tagged as a burning platform for some time now.

Nokia 808 is a smartphone you would consider to use since it gives point and click camera makers a run for their money, having given so high imaging only previously available on commercial cameras on a smartphone. Lets wait and see the rush of users to get a piece of the Pureview. Personally I would love it. As usual, other markets get to sell the device gradually, though no info is provided by Nokia of the schedule. Neither is the price indicated.

[UPDATE] Nokia and Carl Zeiss have, after 7 years of collaboration, extended the business partnership. This means you are going to be seeing Carl Zeiss technology on Nokia phones for longer.

The HP topshot achieves this by capturing six separate images of a document or 3D object to produce finesse in form of a read 3D image either scanned in the computer or printed.

HP TopShot laser jet pro M275 is a product that gives value to Small and Medium Businesses and large enterprises as well. This printer and scanner also has cloud print capabilities enabling users to print via email from their remote devices such as mobile phones, tablets and computers connected to the internet. The HP Topshot creates a Wi-Fi hotspot that covers 200 metre radius, enabling devices with wireless capabilities to print wirelessely to the printer. HP TopShot also supports use of a mobile dongle to connect to the internet to enable email print, with this you can bypass the need for your mobile device to connect to a physical PC.

Some of the features the HP TopShot laser jet pro M275 gives are:

Revolutionary HP Topshot Scanning- which allows you capture 3D objects for use in presentations, enhances a very true graphical presentation. You can even scan out the background off the scanned image, right from the scan wizard.

Innovative web-connected printing- HP Business apps give you ability to scan 3D objects and save them in online storage, doesnt require a PC, scan business contacts to your contact database, tap at the touch screen to download and print from most visited sites, eg business forms, financial news, etc.

Business-boosting mobile printing- Print from any smart mobile device, share from anywhere within the 200m radius, HP wireless direct printing allows users to print without a network from your smartphone.

Convenient multifunctional performance, high quality colour scan, print and photocopy on a wide range of paper sizes.

HP TopShot laser jet pro M275 comes with drivers, no need for CD installations, making setup very fast. Cartridges are also preinstalled. Managing of MFP (Multi Function Product) is made easy via HP Device Toolbox for Windows, which gives access to HP Embedded Server for the printer.

HP TopShot laser jet pro M275 uses upto 60% less energy than other Laser printers, HP Auto-Off technology automatically turns off the MFP when idle.

Late last evening as I was watching the twitter timeline and engaging once in a while I came across this tweet from the official Samsung twitter account which marked the beginning of speculation as to what Samsung has set for us in the next 20 hours.

Destination: tgeltaayehxnx

The parable was actually a hint for people to go to the site www.tgeltaayehxnx.com which had a countdown timer. The word tgeltaayehxnx, as I came to discover was an anagram of The Next Galaxy, the words fit very well. You would have to click the text branded images in the correct order to see the next destination according to the instructions on the website. See the countdown timer below, which has since elapsed.
Rumours about the next Galaxy device from Samsung have been alive in the blogosphere for a long time with wild expectations. Samsung has revealed a teaser video as the countdown came to an end. Looks like the new galaxy will be curved(my assumption), since there are the words ” Where a galaxy fits perfectly into your hand, and a planet horizon, which is curved”. The final words “you can now stand out from everyone else”..then the bleating sheep made me think, do they intend to have a completely new form factor? Samsung had to hit at the iPhone(iSheep), with the sheep part, which is understandable since this is the main rival. Finally there are the two bubbles, one white and another brushed blue.

See the video yourself.

Could this imply that we are seeing flexible displays with the advent of the Galaxy S III? Or what do you make of this

[UPDATE] Samsung has since redirected the www.tgeltaayehxnx.com URL to the Samsung Mobile Youtube channel.

Nokia 103 is not yet announced in the press, but the datasheet is already out and the device promises 27 days of standby, 11 hours talktime with the 800mAh battery. The phone is yet another Series 30 OS phone. Nokia calls it Nokia’s most affordable mobile phone for first time buyers, expected to sell at around $20.
The phone specs are dustproof keypad, 3.5 mm jack, 250sms storage, 500 phone book entries, GSM 900/1800, dimensions are 107.2 x 45.1 x 15.3 mm, weighing 76.57grams, no colour here, its fully black and white unlike the Nokia 100. It uses the 2mm charger connector. Accessories for this phone are Nokia stereo headset WH-102, Nokia Compact Travel Charger AC-5 and a Nokia Mini Speaker MD-8. Included in the package are the Compact charger AC-3, compact visual user guide, Nokia 103 headset and the BL-5CB battery.
At this level it would be ridiculous to forget the flashlight, that is included, then there are the small nitties like the time tracker, polyphonic ringtones, S30 games preloaded, speaking alarm clock(remember Nokia 1100?).
Nokia 103 will be introduced in the market in Q2 of this year, and as expected, this one will sell only in the emerging markets.
