“This is the first legal case in which a Thai company has sued global firms [Nokia of Finland and Navteq of US],” Wichai Saenghirunwattna, general manager of Globetech told the Bangkok Post.

By suing, they seek to show how digital map content is growing with the assistance of smartphones and the digital map market in Thailand has an annual growth of 200-300% annually.And Mr Wichai said that the investigative team found out that Nokia’s Ovi Map supplied by Navteq violated the map’s content copyright.

The company had sent a warning letter last year which started negotiations that have since broken down resulting in the court case filed in the 5th of October to the Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court.

One Nokia executive said on condition of anonymity that they are aware of the suit adding, “We are monitoring the situation and studying the details. We’ll take any necessary steps to defend ourselves.”

This morning, Judge Andreas Voss of the Mannheim Regional Court pronounced a decision on a German Motorola Mobility lawsuit against Apple Sales International, Apple’s Ireland-based European sales organization. Motorola won a permanent injunction against the push email service of Apple’s iCloud (and its predecessor, MobileMe) and any devices that can access it. Note that even though today’s decision enjoins Apple’s European distribution arm, the scope of the injunction is not Europe-wide: the Irish entity has to respect it as far as the German market is concerned (for example, it’s the contractual partner of customers buying Apple products from Apple’s German online store).

Apple has already gone ahead and removed all the said devices on sale from their on-line stores. As of now Apple is still able to sell in their offline stores, but Motorola is still on their neck and might get another ruling off the Mannheim judge for the same to apply to any selling of the Apple products that touch on Patents that Moto owns.

I have been saying this severally now, that Samsung is up-to a big impression in Africa. When others have been mainly sceptical of gambling with the African Market, Samsung is strengthening its presence further. Well. earlier today Samsung Electronics East Africa launched the second Samsung Electronics Engineering Academy in Africa. This was at Woodvale Centre Westlands, Nairobi Kenya. The Samsung Academies have an aim to develop upto 10,000 Electronics Engineers in Africa by 2015, and with this 120 students will be selected from PC Kinyanjui and Kabete Technical Samsung E-learning Centres.

The trainees will receive hands-on training for free with Samsung’s top of the range equipment, They will further get a boost by getting a chance to intern with Samsung  and thereafter work as independent service technicians or employees in their retail channel outlets in the region.

Also during the launch, Samsung launched a new Customer Service Centre on the ground floor of the same building where Samsung customers will get service, repair and inquiries on all Samsung products. This is the way to create a good ecosystem where service and parts of Samsung products of all range can be serviced and at the same time the interns will have a first hand experience with dealing with customer repairs.

Yesterday, the pilot phase of the program officially ended as the first class of students graduated from the first Engineering Academy in Africa in Boksburg, South Africa; which was launched in March 2011. The ceremony was an important milestone for the students, Samsung and the African electronics industry, signifying the program’s success and the ‘green light’ for its rollout in other Africa countries.  Samsung plans to launch the third Academy in Nigeria in the first quarter of this year.

The academies are a part of the company’s global ‘Hope for Children’ initiative, which places a strategic focus on bringing attention to the worldwide need for childhood education and healthcare in an effort to improve communities worldwide.

Now with access to 1 email account, Blackberry Messenger, instant messaging, browsing via the native browser, blackberry app world access and unlimited social networking via the blackberry native social media clients for a mere 500 bob a month seems tempting. Even for the person who would opt out of Blackberry for the lesser smartphone experience may give this a chance.

This is a prized posession and if you would tell me you reduce my cost to access email, the internet and social media for half what it used to be will make me think thrice. It isn’t expensive afterall to stay online and respond to emails on the go.

So what’s the difference with the usual 1000bob tariff? The other tariff offers more email accounts at 10 email accounts, wait! Just that. Now in this world of  email forwarding you have the option to forward the mails to one account and set it up as the one email account. Sadly you wont be able to reply as a separate email account.

Airtel responds to Safaricom’s halving of BlackBerry monthly subscription by doing exactly the same. And then taking out 1 shilling

as seen on Larry Madowo’s tweet. But I dont know if they also have the 20 bob a day offer too.

Now since the time Safaricom and Airtel offered prepaid blackberry service, BB has ceased being a closed platform where you had bills to pay later, you can now be broke and just pay for a day’s access for 20 bob, and opt out in weekends when its not really necessary. Reducing your smartphone to a feature phone.
