Taxify Lowers Prices In Nairobi For A Week

Good news to Taxify fans

The taxi hailing industry is one that has seen one of the biggest reversals in years and it is thanks to the likes of Uber, Lyft, Taxify and many more. They all have the same idea of letting people hail cabs that you can see coming to you and take you wherever you want to go in an easy to use interface.

However, they all have slightly different ways of how they operate and Taxify is the one that seems to be changing its prices every other day. Well, the latest one this month is out and they claim to be even lower than ever.

Almost two weeks ago, Taxify came up with a new price and now they have another one that is lower than before, but it is only valid for a week.

In the new regime, the base fare will be KES 60 plus KES 25 per kilometer, KES 1.8 per minute and a minimum fare of KES 240. The new prices are lower than what they publicized early this month where the base fare was KES 85 plus KES 36 per kilometer, KES 2.6 per minute and a minimum ride fare of KES 260.

The prices are still lower than what Uber charges in Nairobi from the latest revision where they charge KES 100 as base fare, KES 42 per kilometer, KES 3 bob a minute and a minimum fare of KES 300. Taxify threw a subtle shade at Uber which charges these prices including their higher average trip price (KES 553 vs Taxify’s KES 330) and their higher cut from the revenue (25% vs Taxify’s 15%).

Since there is a reduction in prices, Taxify says that they will be compensating their drivers with bonuses for the differences.

  1. While I understand this may be joy for consumers, I think some of these stunts being pulled with the intent of attracting or retaining customers by taxi hailing companies are unsustainable and honestly bad business.

Taxify says they will reimburse drivers for the difference but the drivers are already making way too little because of the subsidies the firm is offering passengers. I used them this morning for a trip from Ngong to UpperHill and my ride fare was Kshs. 600 despite the massive traffic all way.

Time to rethink this business model of huge subsidies to increase customer numbers
