Facebook Messenger 1 billion Play Store downloads

Facebook’s Messenger application is the latest to join the exclusive 1 billion downloads club on Android. The revelation comes from the guy in charge of Messenger at Facebook, David Marcus, who happens to be the Vice President of Messaging Products. Of course the same information can be seen on the Google Play Store.

Messenger now joins Facebook’s other applications Whatsapp and its main application as the other non-Google members of the billion downloads club on the Play Store.

Messenger’s rise to the top of the download charts can be largely attributed to Facebook’s decision to spin-off the chat feature from its main mobile application thus forcing all users to shift to Messenger. As such, Messenger now boasts of over 600 million monthly active users.

Facebook has also been very keen on Messenger as it is now fronting it as a platform. It is even testing games as it looks to engage users even more instead of being just a messaging application. Recently, the application has been updated to support video calls and even mobile payments.
