There literally thousands of android applications that pop out every month. Kenya is not left behind in this trend with local apps going on to make a mark. Which Kenyan Apps should we actually bother downloaded? We scoured the Google Play Store and found some local apps actually worth installing.
Ma3Route
Ma3Route crowd-sources for transport data and provides users with information on traffic, matatu directions and driving. The Application launched in July 2012 and has over 5,000 downloads on the Android platform. The Application is available IOS and on Windows platforms. Users with feature phones can receive traffic alerts through subscribing to SMS alerts. Ma3route is fairly easy to use with the sign up and sharing of information pretty efficient.

Tough Jungle
Tough Jungle is an action game application with an African jungle setting. The application show cases the diverse nature of the jungle with wild animals. The aim of the game is to move the Maasai warrior across the jungle avoiding being killed by dangerous wild animals that attack. The warrior has a spear and a few arrows. A helpful eagle occasional appears with more arrows and the warrior has to jump to get hold of the arrows. Its quite an addictive game which allows the player to advance to different levels in different environments. The game won the Safaricom Appstar challenge in 2013.

Safaricom M-Ledger
Developed in partnership with start-up Dynamic Data Systems, the Safaricom M-ledger provides subscribers on the company’s network with a simple and easy to use financial journal to track and monitor their M-PESA transactions. M-Ledger downloads your M-PESA History from Safaricom and compare this against your local M-PESA text messages generating a detailed record of your transactions including graphs and charts. The application has over 35,000 downloads and is currently available to android operating system users.

Niko Hapa
NikoHapa Mobile allows you to discover new locations and meet up with your friends in a completely new way. The application is a social location sharing application that allows users to use either SMS or their android application to give their location. The SMS Service is charged at 1 shilling. Niko Hapa allows businesses to build a loyal following, get reviews and insights from clients. Think of Yelp meets Foursquare and Google business location.

Standard Digital
Standard Digital News App allows you to catch up with the latest news stories and developments from Kenya and around the world provided by Standard Media Group. Its a pretty decent and neat application allowing the user to customize their news categories based on their interest and also save articles for later reading under the My Stories Tab.
Users can also stream the news. Its also available from the Google Playstore.
