No one can dispute that the Snapdragon 800 is the current king of smartphone chipsets. It is blazingly fast, smashes all the benchmarks and the results are there for anyone with eyes to see. So if you have all that, do you need more? Yes, of course. And Qualcomm is offering just that, more! The Snapdragon 805 announced today is not only as fast as we would expect, it is also being touted by its maker as the “first mobile processor to offer system-level Ultra HD support, 4K video capture and playback and enhanced dual camera Image Signal Processors (ISPs), for superior performance, multitasking, power efficiency and mobile user experiences.” In three words, the Snapdragon 805 is a beast! End of story.

The new Krait 450 quad-core CPU can be clocked at upto 2.5 GHz! Clearly, not even MediaTek’s ‘true’ octa-core chip could rain in on Qualcomm’s parade. The chip has memory bandwidth support of up to 25.6 GB/second to make for an unparalled multimedia content consumption and web browsing experience. It also has an Adreno 420 GPU for all the stunning graphics that you’ll ever want your smartphone to handle. This is also what places the chip at the heart of unbeatable (as of now) 4K video captue and playback support. It also has camera features like gyro integration to enable image stabilization.

We should see the first devices with this beastly chip sometime in 2014. LTE Category 4, dual-band WiFi ac and 4K video streaming via Wi-Fi are some of the notable features supported by this new processor that will make smartphones in the coming year appear to be from out of this world.
