You can say that the demons have been awoken but since the record-breaking Galaxy S II never really slept and continued to gain traction in the wake of the launch of its successors like the hot-selling Galaxy S III, it is now reborn as the Galaxy S II Plus.
The Galaxy S II was a big hit and is credited by many for announcing Samsung’s arrival at the table of honours for mobile devices where it has gone on to take on Apple, RIM and then leading Android OEM, HTC. In a move not surprising to those of us familiar with the Korean-based manufacturer’s moves, Samsung yesterday announced the Galaxy S II Plus, a refreshed Galaxy S II that is ready to stand on its own and make a mark.
The specs are as follows:
- 3G capable (3G HSPA+ 21.1 Mbps, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps). Will still work on 2G networks. No word on LTE capability for those in countries with LTE networks to take advantage of.
- 1.2 GHz dual core processor
- 4.3 inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display
- 8 megapixel rear camera (of course with LED flash); 2 megapixel front-facing shooter. All with the same interface and features as those found on the flagship S III, Note II, Galaxy Premier and most 2012 Samsung Android devices
- Bluetooth 3.0
- Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n. Will also have Wi-Fi Direct. Some versions of the device will have NFC.
- 1650 mAh Li-ion battery
- Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz Nature UX
The device will have all the software enhancements that Samsung rolled out to its high end and mid-range Android devices in 2012 like Pop-Up Video, Group Face Tag and Face Zoom. Of course as you’ll expect the Hubs (Readers, Video, Games and Music) will also be part of the package.
The announcement of this device is two-pronged news: that the owners of the 2011 flagship, the Galaxy S II, will soon be seeing an Android 4.1 update and that there’s still another dual core Droid that is capable of handling all the demand thrown its way.
From the press images released by Samsung, it is safe to assume that the device will at first be available in two colours only i.e Pebble Blue and Marble White.
As of now there is no word from the manufacturer about its pricing but it has already been pointed out that the device will first be unveiled in Germany before launching in other markets.
