It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our global hero, Professor Wangari Maathai, the founder of the Green Belt Movement.
She was the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner and inspired people around the world to take action in protecting and restoring the environment. Professor Maathai passed away on September 25, 2011, after a battle with cancer at Nairobi Hospital in Kenya.
Kenyans, led by Naomi Mutua, have launched an initiative to plant trees on October 1, this coming Saturday, to celebrate the life of our hero. You can find more information about how to take part through the Twitter hashtag #WangariTrees. Join us in this cause. Together, we can honor and celebrate a true hero.
More details will be shared soon. Naomi Mutua has written a blog post with more information. You can join the event on Facebook and show your support for our African heroine, Wangari Maathai.
Wangari Maathai is trending on Twitter as people around the world celebrate her legacy.
Seedlings are priced at KES 20. If you’d like to order one, please contact Ms. Naomi Mutua on Twitter or through the event page. You’re also welcome to bring your own seedlings. Details about the types of trees to be planted will be shared later.
Stay tuned for updates!
